Super Rugby wider training groups announced

FIVE MEMBERS from the New Zealand Under 20 team and three from last season’s national sevens side are among the 40 players picked in the New Zealand Super Rugby franchises’ wider training groups.

The Blues, Chiefs, Hurricanes, Crusaders and Highlanders unveiled their eight-man groups today.

Five New Zealand Under 20 players – Steven Luatua and Francis Saili from Auckland, Codie Taylor and Dominic Bird from Canterbury and Mitchell Scott of Tasman – have been included in the Blues’ and Crusaders’ groups respectively.

Former New Zealand Sevens reps Rory Grice (Chiefs), Jackson Ormond (Hurricanes) and Buxton Popoali’i (Highlanders) are also in the mix.

The players selected in the wider training groups will provide injury cover for the full squads during the season.

Blues: James Parsons (North Harbour), Steven Luatua (Auckland), Sean Polwart (Auckland), Daniel Pryor (Northland), Wayne Ngaluafe (Northland), Francis Saili (Auckland), Hadleigh Parkes (Auckland).  Eighth player to be advised.

Chiefs: Rory Grice (Waikato), Josh Hohneck (Bay of Plenty), Marcel Cummings-Toone (Waikato), Ronald Raaymakers (Counties), Phil Burleigh (Bay of Plenty), Augustine Pulu (Counties), Piers Francis (Waikato).  Eighth player to be advised.

Hurricanes: Whetu Henry (Wellington), Blade Thomson (Taranaki), Scott Fuglistaller (Wellington), Michael Coman (Hawkes Bay), Serge Lilo (Wellington), Frae Wilson (Wellington), Jackson Ormond (Taranaki). Eighth player to be advised.

Crusaders: Codie Taylor (Canterbury), Sam Prattley (Tasman), Dominic Bird (Canterbury), Brendon O’Connor (Canterbury), Joe Moody (Canterbury), Mark Swanepoel (Canterbury), Johnny McNicholl (Canterbury), Mitchell Scott (Tasman)

Highlanders: Jacob Ellison (Otago), Brayden Mitchell (Southland), Liam Coltman (Otago), Daniel Ramsay (Otago), Glenn Dickson (Otago), Buxton Popoali’i (Otago).  Two players to be advised.
